Kocot Team – Summary of day 2

As most of the teams on day 2 we finished shortly before Accous – TP2. The weather grounded everyone for most of the time, but we’ve still managed to squeeze 3 flights, cutting more than 20km of the overall distance.

It was a bit tricky and risky move, with low cloudbase, rains and strong wind, and doesn’t seem to a

have made significant difference in ranking, but that’s always less walking. Plus it’s a flying competition in the end 😉

Now we’re hoping to speed up with drier weather and entering higher mountains.

Fred Juvaux’s team, XPyr D 2

The objective would have been to honor the concept of walking (as little as possible) and flying (a max!!!) for this second day of competition and to quickly gain height, which Fred tried, but the sky decided otherwise… The weather is the same for everyone, it makes the weather rage, but it’s egalitarian.

“Sixty terminals” (including 5km of flight), 1500m of d+ (2800m of d+ yesterday).

  • 11 a.m.: We are waiting to find out if a flight window will finally open behind this thick mist of clouds, a little further east. The forecasts are not phew…
  • 1 p.m. : A dart quickly done well, seized opportunistically, just a little above the road. At least one, phew! The rest of the day was walking, refueling (chorizo go!!!), massage and mental work. Tough… the next beacon, objective of this second day, well on the way with a tired ankle, the repetition of movements on the flat for a Pyrenean!, the lack of drugs/theft! 😉 What a difference in levels never encountered before during the other competitions in which Fred participated (Bornes to fly, Tarent’Air Tour, etc.).
  • 8:20 p.m. Stop. Shower. Hot meal. Massage. Dodo. Save for the rest, hoping that the legs will start again tomorrow morning. We keep our fingers crossed…

To be continued!

Tanguy Renaud-Goud’s day 2

Again a strong day fighting with the rain and low cloud bases. Tanguy managed to do again more than 70km mainly by walking .

It’s hard, painful but still keep pushing and thinking to the probably good flying conditions for the next days.

We started the day hoping to make a glide from the pass after where we slept but unfortunately the cloud and the rain didn’t give us any chances to fly, so running all the morning and afternoon was the only solution.

At the end of the day we tried one last thing, hiking up to the Soum De Layens to make a glide in the direction of TP2, Accous but again, unfortunately the cloud was very thick and we had to go down of around 300m to exit from the cloud to be able to make this glide.

Tonight we are in the valley going up to the Spanish border, and we hope to start the day of tomorrow with a nice flight from the pass.

Have a good evening!

Tanguy’s team!

James Elliott – Day 1

Despite the poor weather forcast, team Canada placed well at the end of day 1.

We were able to cover a little under 80km by a combination of hiking and 2 flights.

Even though everyone knew it was going to be a poor forcast the pace was still set really high and were happy with the decisions we made and the pace we set for ourselves.

We’re currently not expecting much for day 2 weather-wise, but we’ll see what we can do with it!

Go team Canada!

Kinga Masztalerz – Days 1 and 2!

We’ve just closed our day 2 and all we can say is… woah! On day one, Kinga flew 5 times, slope landing 3 of those to make her way up each mountain in her path and take off. Her route left her to sleep on a mountain near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the end of the day. This kept her in a great position to launch early in the morning.

Day two can be summarized as WET. However she still squeezed in two flights to take her from 25th to 22nd. These flights were short and sweet, breaking up the serious amount of pavement pounding all the athletes were enduring today. What an adventure this adventure race is turning out to be! It was all smiles at the end of the day, even at the rainy camp.

Without them, the X-Pyr wouldn't exist.
