“Tomas Matera daily report – Tuesday.
Today I enjoyed a lot 😁 More hiking, nice chat with local police, finally lot of flying 🙏 My day is at the end just under Peña Montsnesa with some spare time until day stop. So we had a nice dinner with friends and now I’m happy to go sleep.”

Finally Sun and paragliding!!!

Last landing of the day, you can see that it is very windy and even flies backwards.
Kinga Masztalerz – Day3- Last landing of the day
Last takeoff of the day – Iñigo Gabiria – Day3 –
We did a video update at lunchtime, posted nearer to 17:00 about what happened this morning. You can see this on the X-Pyr race news.

So by this afternoon the second third of the field had passed the second turn point. Shortly after leaving the Accous valley and heading south, the sun started shining and the conditions began to improve significantly! We finally saw the sun again!

Many pilots were sore, blistered and some limping, so relieved to finally be flying.
The leading pack took off from Astun and flew to Formigal and then relaunched and flew for approximately 8 hours. They managed to get even further and Chrigel Maurer, Maxime Pinot, Simon Oberrauner, Tanguy Renaud-Goud, Pierre Remy, Tim Alongi, Noé Court are currently half way to TP5. The longest flights were around 180 km.

Between TP 4 and TP 5 are Jordi Vilalta, Lars Meerstetter, Xevi Bonet, James Elliot, Ignacio Arevalo, Logan Walters, Andreas Viehböck, Remi Bourdelle, Thibault Voglet and David Corpas
Between TP3 to 4 we have Thomas Matera, Cedar Wright, Fabian Umbricht, Sergi Claret, Keith Paterson, Rob Curran, Edouard Potel, Rich Binstead, Kinga Masztalerz, Patrick Sieber, Luis Linde, Lino Colo, Giuliano Minutella, Nicolás Hayes, Mikolaj Kocot, Reto Reiser, David Liano and Yuji Emoto.

Between TP 2 and 3 Joao Simonsen, , Heli Schrempf, Greg Hamerton, Iñigo Gabiria and Johannes Helleland.
We now have the whole field past TP 2!
Huge and notable flights include Pierre Remy, Ignacio Arevalo and Xevi Bonet. But loads of people did spectacular flights today.
A few bits of bad news… Edoardo Colombo and Fred Juvaux have had to withdraw due to injury.

There were also some penalties awarded for cloud flying, air space infringement and team flying. More on those and their duration in the update tomorrow.
Making decisions.
Arrival at the foot of Peña Montañesa, after a third amazing flight.
Take off this morning from Accous – Kinga Masztalerz
Finally the forecast reported sun, OK winds, and hopefully good flying. We were in a good position to hike up mt Madelaine. At 800 meters this mountain is launchable in any direction.
I was early at the top but the clouds were still below, it probably needed some time to dry up from yesterday. So we decided to wait for better conditions. Wait and wait…

After too many hours waiting I decided to give it a go. No joy. Dead air. I glided southeast and landed high before hiking up another hill. Relaunched, still with a low cloudbase. I had some small thermals but they were really small and broken. I was right at the inversion layer and it was very obvious. Once again I had to land hillside and hike up again. Another try and I finally got some more altitude. Glided on track and was able to catch some weak lift, but not enough to jump over to more pronounced mountains. I was forced to land and continue walking the rest of the day. Frustrating!
I continued along the road and my team had parked the van on a small pass leading to TP2. Nice weather, great nature, and hopefully a flyable site for tomorrow morning. The idea was to be airborne early for a sweet glide.

Today was the day that we were supposed to move in the air,not on the ground. But my mistakes from the day before made it difficult. I was too far west and not at the higher ground I needed to be to take advantage of this day due to the strong inversion and humid air below. The race now split into two. The leading groups that were in position to fly well this day, and the rest who didn’t. Unfortunately I was in the latter group. Or maybe more precisely: I made too many errors the day before, and was not well enough updated on the forecast to take advantage of this day. But it’s difficult to be ahead of everything at all times. Last night we spent at a camping site where the owner was drunk. Really shitfaced. It took us a lot of time just to get settled, and there was no time to prepare well for today. Just a quick glance at the map and the general forecast. And again we didn’t get much sleep. Maybe two or three hours. The whole team was tired.
We finished this day being last in the competition. Not a good place to be. But as mentioned we made too many errors, and when making the first error it’s hard to get out of the loop. One mistake leads to another. We needed to reset!
This evening it was clear skies, and no thunderstorms, so I put up a tent to be able to sleep better. Very much needed! We found a beautiful place, made some food, and were able to get to rest quite early that evening.

The start in the day was not the most pleasent thing. We slept in, to give my feet and knee a little more rest. Then, a climb through thick fog and a wet forest allowed the limbs to warm up a bit. We found a take-off which was just below cloudbase and allowed a flight in to the LZ of Accous. After a break to discuss strategy, I decided to take the route through the high mountains. Walking uphill works great, but flats and downhill are killing my foot-ligaments, so it was the obvious choice. A nice hike of 1800m allowed to reach the sun above the clouds and take off at Col Lardi. Conditions were on, so i could fly just to the entrance of the tunnel to Canfranc. There I teamed up with Cedar Wright, and we had a blast to reach the take-off above Canfranc.
Finally, spanish air. From Canfranc, I flew with Cedar quite a while, then our ways separeted. I took a risky option and nearly got stuck in the valley wind. Thankfull, the Westwind was pushing through also in the lowest layers, so I had en epic das evening flight just to the foot of Pena Montanesa.
It will take a while until my supporter catch up, but it was totally worth it 🙂

Jordi and his team have chosen a hotel for tonight. Views can’t complain.
